Very few activities are as rewarding and accessible on an island as fishing. Add top-notch event organisers, a bevy of sponsors and some enticing prizes and you get the kind of fishing competition that can’t be missed. The Bermuda Triple Crown Billfish Championship — which consists of the Bermuda Billfish Blast, Bermuda Big Game Classic and Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament — features nine days of fishing that bring together weekend fishermen and some of the toughest competitors from around the world. The points earned at each event follow the boats, crews and individual anglers as each individual event progresses. They are combined and tallied at the end of the three events to recognise the top three teams, who receive sizeable prize packages. For summer 2013, the Bermuda Billfish Blast will take place July 3–7. A short break will be followed by the Bermuda Big Game Classic, which will run from July 10–14, and the Sea Horse Anglers Club Billfish Tournament will closeout the competition from July 17–21. Last year, out of a fleet of around 40 boats, team Fa-La-Me took first prize with a grand total of 3,900 points and won $226,575 in cash and $50,000 in prizes. Second and third place were won by team Bree and team Over Budget respectively, with only 100 points separating the first- from second-place winners. The finish was hard fought and could set the stage for a showdown at this year’s competition, which is poised to be the biggest one yet. (bermudatriplecrown.com)
