WALK ALONG THE MANY CANDY-COLOURED STREETS IN BERMUDA, AND YOU’LL DISCOVER PARISH AFTER PARISH FILLED WITH FASHION FINDS JUST WAITING TO BE REVEALED. Bermuda doesn’t discriminate when it comes to shopping. You’ll find 21 square miles of well-stocked variety here, with everything from local island treasures and familiar labels to designer duds and works of art — and all without a sales tax. The best discounts in Bermuda are found during the “off season” (autumn and winter). Stores reduce prices to make way for the new season’s merchandise. But no matter what time of year you plan to shop, most local stores will offer some sort of sale. So put on your comfortable shoes and prepare yourself for a true shopping treasure hunt. X marks the spot. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE LOCALS Start your shopping scavenger hunt at the Royal Naval Dockyard in the West End of the island. It has plenty of local artisans at work. You’ll spot the Clocktower Mall by the pair of landmark 100-foot-tall clock towers. Here, boutiques have replaced the former administrative offices of the Royal Navy. This mall is great for purchasing designer perfumes and cosmetics at a discount. Native flowers and island spices play a big role in the medley of fragrances, Crafted oils, and natural skin-care and spa products. Lilies, oleanders, jasmine, sweet peas, passionflowers and cedar are amongst Bermuda’s most exquisite scents. Plenty of shops selling handmade gifts are common here, but the mall carries everything from T-shirts to Cuban cigars. The sale of Bermudian crafts is booming now as a result of shoppers who come seeking an air of regional relevance and local authenticity, as well as that personal touch that adds sentimental value to a purchase. Masterful works of pottery, ceramics, intricate blown glass like those found in Dockyard Glassworks in Dockyard, and handmade jewellery from Seaglass Studio in St. George’s are popular. Bona fide Bermudian cedar is often sought in fashion accessories, home accents and locally manufactured furniture pieces that can be shipped home. THE FINER THINGS Not to be confused with Hamilton Parish, the City of Hamilton is considered by many to be the tourist hub in Bermuda. Here, you can expect boutiques and department stores carrying handcrafted accents as well as Danish flatware; Wedgwood plates; Villeroy & Boch tableware; Waterford, Swarovski, Lalique and Baccarat crystal; and Lladró and Hummel collectibles. Also on hand: plenty of local jewellery stores carrying designer jewellery and statement timepieces, like Rolex, TAG Heuer and Cartier. Bermuda’s generous offerings of gold, silver and fine jewels, including Tahitian pearls and Australian opals, make it a premier destination for treasure seekers. But there’s also been a surge in demand for uniquely Bermudian pieces that often incorporate treasures from the sea. Colourful shells, iridescent mother-of-pearl, polished sea glass and even ancient artefacts salvaged from centuries- old wrecks are all on shoppers’ lists. Look out for colourful and tropical linen products and unique ceramics that are specially made and labelled with a local signature at The Island Shop. Staying true to Bermuda’s European roots, there is no better place to find exquisite imported textiles like British fabrics, as well as fine Irish linens and Icelandic woollen goods, at lower prices than in the United States or Europe. If you’re an avid stamp collector, visit the Bermuda Philatelic Bureau for commemorative British stamps, including Diamond Jubilee — Coronation, which are sure to be musthaves in any collector’s repertoire. When you need a break from all the treasure hunting, quite a few spots in the City of Hamilton offer a proper English tea service. And if you prefer an on-thego caffeine experience, Bermuda’s freshly brewed coffee is also big here, with plenty of vendors within walking distance of Front Street. For foodies seeking a taste of paradise, native treats such as sweet local honey, sherry-pepper condiments, jams, marmalades and Bermuda rum cakes are a must and can be found at many local eateries and department stores. A uniquely Bermudian souvenir is a bottle of Gosling’s Black Seal, the island’s signature rum. Add it to Barritts Ginger Beer for a traditional (and delicious) Dark ’n’ Stormy cocktail. Those looking to take home a few bottles of their favourite BACARDÍ rum, GREY GOOSE vodka, DEWAR’S Blended Scotch whisky and so many more BACARDÍ brands should head to Burrows, Lightbourn Limited stores in Hamilton and St. George’s. AN ART LOVER’S PARADISE As you make your way east, you’ll want to peruse the shopping options throughout St. George’s for a side of sightseeing with your retail therapy. It is the simplest parish to navigate, as it’s easy to walk around here. Somers Wharf has all of the popular stores along Water Street and York Street is a stone’s throw away. Don’t forget to venture up the town’s side streets to check out hidden gems like The Bermuda Perfumery. When it comes to art, landscape paintings, sculptures, crafts, print and photography items are true testaments to the island’s cultural boom and are considered some of the hottest buys. Bermuda has been able to strike a balance between internationally known names, such as Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keeffe, and local superstars like Jo Birdsey Linberg and Roland Skinner. Its thriving arts community has created a bustling scene that attracts discerning shoppers, dealers and collectors. For a taste of the best, look for galleries and workshops showcasing Bermudian paintings, sculptures and fine arts, or make an appointment and stop by a local artist’s studio. Another way to immerse in a more Bermudian state of mind is to visit the island’s many bookstores. Far more than just good beach reading, you will find an extensive selection of international bestsellers along with beautiful and enriching tomes detailing the history, traditions, culture and architecture of this fascinating island. Generally, store hours in Hamilton are Monday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Clocktower Mall in Royal Naval Dockyard is open seven days a week — except Christmas Day and Good Friday — from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the summer and 10 a. m. to 5 p.m. during the winter. No matter what you seek, you are sure to find it in Bermuda’s many charming shops. So get out there and take home a piece of paradise.
