In 2012, Bermuda added a new event to its busy calendar by playing host to the inaugural Atlantic Corporate Games. “Get Fit for Business” was the ultimate mix of business, sport and tourism combined with networking opportunities and social activities for all those who participated. Since its inception in 1987, the Corporate Games have been held in more than 25 countries and 53 cities worldwide. The four-day games in Bermuda — organised by the Whitfield Group event marketing firm — brought together more than 1,500 locals joined by several overseas participants hailing from Toronto, Bucharest, Istanbul, the U.K., New York and Florida. The Fortune 1000 “weekend sports warriors” competed in 18 different sports, including basketball, beach volleyball, ten-pin bowling and local favourites such as tennis, golf, badminton and rugby. A grand parade of athletes with a street fest, a beach barbecue and a closing awards celebration were also on the programme. Besides fostering fitness and friendship in the workplace, the event gave participants exposure to the island’s greatest assets. As a major international business centre, Bermuda is home to the best-known and most-respected global insurance, and its financial sector is composed of several allied activities, including commercial insurance and reinsurance, captive insurance, corporate and personal trusts, fund administration, finance and international registers of aircraft and shipping. During the sunny weekend of sport and fun, the corporate athletes were also given the opportunity to learn about Bermuda’s educated workforce, high-standard regulation, pro-business disposition and tax neutrality. Most importantly, they got to experience firsthand that on this island paradise, even busy and tired businessmen get a chance to play.
