In 1992, Tiny, one of Bermuda’s endemic whistling tree frogs, became an unofficial ambassador for his island nation, introducing young children to all of its sights and wonders through his self-guided tour. One fine day, Tiny decides to skip his daytime sleep and explore what his home has to offer. Dressed in Bermuda shorts and a widebrimmed hat — and with a camera in tow — he leaps onto a horse-drawn buggy, which takes him to a number of iconic locations. On each page a short rhyme accompanied by a charming illustration introduces children to a new destination, including an impressive fort, a perfume factory, mystical caves, pink beaches and many other stops along the way. Thanks to Tiny the Tree Frog Tours Bermuda, author Elizabeth A. Mulderig is now one of the island’s premier folk artists. Her book became a best-seller here, even winning the Lilly Award for children’s literature in 1996 and Tiny’s work as an island guide opened the door for him to go on subsequent adventures. Mulderig has also introduced other characters in her 20-plus years as a writer. She has released a number of children’s books, including Do-Boy Digs Bermuda, Tiny the Tree Frog’s Bermuda Cookbook for Kids and Toppy Tours the Dinosaurs. Her artwork, along with that of other local artists, was featured at The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art in the 4+4=1 exhibit in 2012, and she has taken tours through Europe to promote her books. You can pick up a copy of your own at the Dockyard Pharmacy in Royal Naval Dockyard or A.S. Cooper & Sons stores islandwide.
