TAKING HOME A PIECE OF BERMUDA IS EASY. MANY SOUVENIRS AND TASTY PRODUCTS ARE MADE RIGHT HERE AND CANNOT BE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE. Most travellers love to return home with gifts and mementos that reflect their experiences in the destination they visited. As an island, Bermuda is naturally limited in resources, but Bermudians are a resourceful lot. Throughout their history they have made functional, beautiful and often delicious products with what they do have at their disposal. Here’s a list of what you might find. The Beauty of Sea Glass From jewellery to décor, the sea glass that washes up on Bermuda’s shores certainly makes for eye-catching pieces. Well known for its shipwrecks, the island has also become popular for its bountiful sea glass. Bottles, jars, ceramics, plates, windshields and other sources of glass end up in the ocean and are broken and weathered by the elements. The resulting one-of-a-kind pieces of glass are used by artisans to make beautiful presents and even better keepsakes. Sweet and Spicy Whether you get your hands on genuine Bermuda honey, a rum cake made with the locally distilled spirit or a jar of hot pepper jam, the flavour of the island can be with you anywhere. The local honey, which gets its taste from the combination of flowers the bees visit; the rum, which is steeped in history and has become a key ingredient in a number of traditional recipes; and the hot pepper jam, which is made with local ingredients, such as scotch bonnet peppers, each present a different note of Bermuda’s authentic flavour. Crafting Wood An array of plates and bowls, as well as furniture and décor, are made with wood from the endemic Bermuda cedar and the driftwood that washes up on the local shores. The sweet exotic aroma and dark hues of the cedar make its products quite impressive. They’re also rather pricey, since the few trees left are protected. Craftsmen work with old stockpiled pieces of wood whenever they can find them. Because it is more readily available, artwork and decorative products made with driftwood are less expensive, but no less ornate. Each piece is unique, making for a truly one-of-a-kind purchase.
