BERMUDA PROVES THAT BEING ECO-FRIENDLY IS BEING BUSINESS SAVVY Becoming eco-friendly sounds expensive for businesses at first: solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, wind power. But what few businesses realise is that going green actually saves money and betters the environment. Bermuda Gas & Utility Company Limited is being eco-conscious by supplying electric stoves and promoting magnetic models, wherein the burner senses the size of the pot and heats that section up only. Bacardí Bermuda is another business doing its part by going green. The international spirits brand focuses on water and energy efficiency and has a global programme to reduce harmful emissions. The company saves 900 tonnes of CO2 by having wind turbines instead of using energy from fossil fuels. Even markets are contributing to this environmental movement. Lindo’s Group of Companies started small with green bags and lighting changes and has worked its way up with SunPower solar panels, Hillphoenix refrigeration systems and biodegradable meat and produce trays. The AES Foundation is providing a lot of these businesses with micro-renewable, nonpolluting energy sources, too, such as solar panels. The company has direct access to an extensive inventory and the latest technological resources in the renewable energy field. They offer free site assessments and proposals for businesses, helping them reach the next level of eco-consciousness. “Bermuda needs to end its dependence on high-priced imported oil for its power and fuel needs,” said R. James Woolsey, the former director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, at Business Bermuda’s 2011 AGM (Annual General Meeting). “The cost of oil has become increasingly volatile and unpredictable.”
