BERMUDA’S WEATHER MAKES FOR A PRIME LOCATION FOR SOME OF THE BEST 5KS AND MARATHONS. The sand, the sea, the sun: No combination makes for a better running experience, in our opinion. And the best place for you to run for it? Bermuda, naturally. The tropical weather lends itself to breezy, carefree runs, and the best part is its seemingly constant marathons and 5Ks. Here are our top three choices for year-round running fun. Many say it all started with the Bermuda Marathon. The marathon celebrated its 91st year in 2016, and it has transformed into a full weekend of activities. Many consider it the “Bermuda Triangle Challenge,” as there are three races in three days. Friday’s race is a Front Street Mile; Saturday’s offerings are a 10K run and a 10K walk; and Sunday is the Bermuda Marathon and Half Marathon. Runners are surrounded by crystal-clear waters warmed by the Gulf Stream, making it the perfect destination for wintertime. The marathon weekend typically takes place in January, and with “3 races in 3 days — Can you survive?” as its motto, many marathoners from around the world make their way to Bermuda for the festivities. A variety of charities are chosen simultaneously, and in 2015 the event gave more than $250,000 to Bermuda charities. They have raised more than $5.1 million for local charities since 1988. The premise is simple: Go from one end of the island to the other, as people pledge their support. What’s interesting is that this isn’t just for runners; walkers, elite swimmers, bicyclists, rowers and paddle boarders are all encouraged to participate as well. If a full marathon experience seems a bit daunting, the Appleby Bermuda Half Marathon offers two options: Participate individually or as part of a relay team. The race takes place from St. George’s to Hamilton and offers 10 official refreshment stations on the course. In its 38th year in 2016, the event is sanctioned by the Bermuda National Athletics Association. For more information, visit bermudamarathon.bm.
